Money & costs
How much does Kvareli cost?
Georgia uses the Georgian lari (GEL). Cards work at the larger wineries, the estate and lake hotels and most town restaurants, but family marani, the market, village stops and drivers still expect cash, and withdrawal options thin out quickly once you leave Kvareli for the villages toward Nekresi and Gremi. Kvareli is the hardest of the Kakhetian wine bases to call cheap or expensive, because it runs two separate economies a couple of kilometres apart: an ordinary Georgian town with local restaurants, a market and modest guesthouses, and a cluster of estate and lake properties built for wine tourism. Where you sleep effectively sets your price level for the whole stay, because the estate properties are not within walking distance of anything else. Every meal is then taken on site, and the daily total rises quietly through dinners rather than through the room rate you compared when booking.
