Getting around Sighnaghi

Sighnaghi's historic center is compact and best explored on foot. The challenge begins outside town: Bodbe is close, but wineries, villages, Telavi and other Kakheti sights are spread over a wide area. Travelers planning wine tastings should use a private driver, organized tour or another arrangement that avoids driving after alcohol. Public transport can reach major towns but is less convenient for multi-stop winery itineraries.

Problems worth knowing

01

Trying to wine-taste with a rental car

Wine is central to the experience, so self-driving creates an obvious conflict if you intend to drink.

02

Assuming Kakheti is compact

The Alazani Valley is large, and several famous wineries may sit far apart despite being in the same region.

03

Treating Sighnaghi as only a Tbilisi day trip

Day trips often arrive and leave at similar times, meaning overnight visitors experience a much quieter town in the evening and morning.

04

Underestimating cobblestones and slopes

The old town is small, but steep streets can make walking more tiring than expected.
