Mtskheta & Jvari Monastery

The former capital of Georgia is one of the easiest and most culturally significant trips from Tbilisi. Mtskheta contains major religious monuments including Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, while Jvari Monastery sits above the town with views over the surrounding landscape.

Getting there: A taxi or private driver is the simplest option for combining central Mtskheta with Jvari. Public transport can be cheaper but generally requires more planning and may not conveniently connect every monument.

Kakheti Wine Region

Georgia’s principal eastern wine region combines wineries, historic monasteries, vineyards, villages and towns such as Sighnaghi. It is one of the strongest day trips for travelers interested in Georgian wine and food culture.

Getting there: A guided tour or private driver is usually the most practical choice when visiting multiple wineries. If wine tasting is part of the day, do not self-drive after drinking.

Sighnaghi & Bodbe

Sighnaghi is a compact hill town in Kakheti with historic walls and broad views over the Alazani Valley. Nearby Bodbe Monastery is one of Georgia’s important religious sites.

Getting there: Private car, driver or an organized Kakheti excursion is the easiest option. It is often combined with winery visits rather than treated as an isolated trip.

Davit Gareja Monastery & Semi-Desert

The historic cave-monastery complex lies in a dramatically different semi-desert landscape southeast of Tbilisi. It is valuable as much for the landscape and religious history as for the monastery itself.

Getting there: A private driver or organized excursion is usually the easiest option because public transport is limited and road conditions can change.

Uplistsikhe & Gori

Uplistsikhe is an ancient rock-cut settlement west of Tbilisi and is commonly paired with nearby Gori. The combination provides a very different historical experience from Tbilisi’s urban monuments.

Getting there: Train or road transport can reach Gori, but a car, driver or organized excursion makes it easier to combine Gori with Uplistsikhe.

Kazbegi / Stepantsminda

Stepantsminda in the Greater Caucasus gives travelers access to some of Georgia’s most dramatic mountain scenery and the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church. It is possible as a long day trip but is substantially better when travelers can stay overnight.

Getting there: Shared transport, organized tours and private drivers operate from Tbilisi. A private or organized trip allows stops along the Georgian Military Highway. Check current road and weather conditions before departure.
